The 24-year-old is the cause of the whole situation and does not appear in the listing at all. Neither does the father, beyond a verb. That leaves two people in a house that has just stopped being a marriage, with the reason for it offstage.

It is an economical way to run a short serial. The most dramatic event happened before the first scene, so none of the five parts is spent on it. What remains is its effect on the two who stayed.

Loyalty

A stepson owes a stepmother very little in the formal sense. She is his father's wife and, as of this week, perhaps not even that. His arrival is therefore a choice, and the listing treats it as a decent one. The series begins with the audience on his side.

That is the useful trap. A character introduced as the good person in the family has further to fall, and a premise that starts from kindness can end somewhere very different without having to change direction.

This one is different in kind because the father is gone for good and the series does not pretend otherwise.
